LIVING UNITED with Savage Services

By Shannon Harmon

Resource Development Executive

Working at United Way of Salt Lake as a Resource Development Executive means that I am invited into a variety of workplace settings, from retail and warehouse locations to formal board rooms filled with company executives.  All of the companies I work with make my job exciting as each runs a unique workplace giving campaign.  This past summer, I had  the great opportunity to complete another of these one-of-a-kind campaigns with Savage Services.  This experience leaves me thinking this company is quite unlike any other.  As their website says, Savage strives to “consistently exceed your expectations and create productive relationships.”  And they certainly exceeded expectations for their 2010-2011 campaign!

This year was remarkably different and started with 85 Savage employees attending tours of our Neighborhood Centers.  We were excited to host these tours and we were thrilled that so many employees could take time out of their busy work day to witness what is happening in our community.   Many employees expressed gratitude to be able to tour the Neighborhood Centers as it really brought United Way to life and many were surprised to see what was happening right in their backyard.

Savage Services would not have been able to ‘consistently exceed your expectations and create productive relationships’ during the 2010-2011 United Way Campaign without the tireless efforts of Savage’s own internal committee.  Under the leadership of Cydney Garland, other Savage employees including Brandi Mechling, David Harris, Debbie Rhodes, Judy Broadbent, Kirk Aubry, Korey Adams, Nathan Savage, Sakura Krapsicher, Sharon Broadwater, Todd Savage and their fearless leader Allen Alexander (who also serves on our Board) all worked hard to make this year the best yet.  A HUGE thank you to each of them!

The result of this year’s campaign?? Drum roll please…

Employee contributions increased by 80% and 100% of their employees participated to make this happen!

Another way that Savage Services Corporation shows their support of United Way of Salt Lake is by matching employee contributions 2:1.  This bring the grand total of their workplace giving campaign to just under $215,000!! Very impressive.

However, our praises to Savage Services don’t stop there.  Not only were they able to make a very significant contribution to solving community problems through their workplace giving campaign, they also participated in our recent event called Stuff the Bus.  They collected school supplies for the Neighborhood Centers and with the corporate match donated $2,389.72.  Their contribution helped us provide and stuff over 5,000 backpacks to children who needed school supplies.

We also want to thank the many Savage employees that donated their time to the Day of Caring.  Their hard work really helped to make this day a success!

We are very grateful for the heartfelt generosity of ALL employees at Savage.

Truly, Savage Services knows what it means to LIVE UNITED.

Affinity Groups Social Event

by Chelsea Nelson

Communications Director

This past week the Affinity Group Social event was held at the local Tony Caputo’s Market and Deli in Downtown Salt Lake.  The event was hosted by UWSL’s Tocqueville Society and several members of the Women’s Philanthropic Network and Young Leaders were in attendance. Having members of all three of these Affinity Groups in one place was wonderful! The evening was sponsored by Holland & Hart and Questar and we are so grateful for their support!

Matt Caputo and Caputo’s Market did an amazing job giving our guests culinary tours and tastings that delighted everyone in the group.  Wine pairings and culinary bites of Southern European foods provided a wonderful atmosphere where attendees could mingle and network, which was followed by an amazing dinner. Some of the highlights of the evening were the short introductory classes on fine chocolate, fine cheese, and balsamic vinegar.  Affinity members were definitely excited when they were able to take a bottle of the delicious balsamic home with them!  Thank you, Caupto’s, for such a fabulous event filled with education and tasty dishes!

And thank you to all of our Affinity members who support us–we couldn’t do it without you.

Tuesday Tip: Preparing for Disasters: Keep Your Car Tuned Up and Gassed Up

Don’t let your car get far below half a tank. If disaster strikes and you need to leave in a hurry, stopping at the gas station might not be possible. Also, keep current on maintenance and repairs. And as an extra precaution, keep a $20 or $50 bill under the mat of your car, just in case.

Beware of an emergency on the road, too. Keep your car stocked with necessities such as jumper basic tools, jumper cables, flares, flashlight, first-aid kit, blankets, a shovel, tissues, drinking water, and nonperishable food.

For more information about how you can prepare for a crisis, check out all the emergency and life crisis related resources on the Believe in Your Future website.

Junior Achievement of Utah teamed with United Way and Goldman Sachs staff members to bring the Junior Achievement program to students at Hawthore and Lincoln Elementary.  Junior Achievement educates students in the fields of work readiness, entrepreneurship and financial literacy.  Last year over 70,000 students in 2,774 classrooms received the Junior Achievement program through generous community financial and volunteer support.

Hats off to all of the organizers and volunteers!

South Herriman Stake–Day of Service

By Brian Guyer

Director of Donor and Community Engagement

Recently the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints leaders asked members around the world to perform a “Day of Service” to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Church’s welfare program.  In response, the South Herriman Stake worked with United Way of Salt Lake and the Jordan River Commission to put one thousand volunteers to work along the Jordan River corridor – from the Legacy Nature Preserve in Davis County to Bluffdale.

The volunteer effort focused on removing weeds, trash pick-up, native seed spreading, painting, wrapping trees, and removing invasive Russian Olives and Tamarisk trees.  Projects like this are critical for Salt Lake County and the Jordan River Commission because noxious weeds, like Puncturevine, make trails and walkways hazardous for pets and bicyclists.  United Way is not typically in the business of noxious weed removal but we are in the business of partnering with community organizations and volunteer groups  to make our community a better place to live.

The volunteers put in a hard day’s work and left feeling great about this worthwhile project.  If you haven’t been down to the Jordan River Parkway recently, I encourage you to hop on your bike and take a ride to enjoy the fruits of the Herriman South Stake’s labor.

If you are interested in a group or individual volunteer project please don’t hesitate to call 2-1-1 or contact Sarah Trescott at sarah@uw.org.
