“Bill” visits UWSL Board

The new mascot for the Believe in Your Future Campaign made his first appearance at the United Way Board meeting. The mascot’s name, very appropriately, is Bill. Bill will be showing up at various classes and events throughout the month as part of ongoing efforts of the Believe Campaign. United Way of Salt Lake is a partner in the Believe Campaign and sponsored the development of the mascot. Other partners include numerous businesses, banks, credit unions, nonprofit organizations, and the State Treasurer’s Office.

A fun and engaging mascot, Bill is appealing to children and adults. He will surely be a friendly reminder to us all about the importance of being money-wise. Look for Bill at the State Capitol on the morning of Monday, February 28, when he makes his first official public appearance for the launch of the Believe in Your Future website (www.BelieveInYourFuture.org). This exciting day will be the conclusion of a week of finance-related activities called Utah Saves Challenges Week. This week has been created by Senator Patricia Jones. A big thank you to Senator Jones and all the Believe Campaign partners!!

More than counting beans!

Chief Financial Officer

Nine years ago, when I took the position of Chief Financial Officer at United Way of Salt Lake, our CEO gave me the charge to help make United Way the most financially accountable and transparent non-profit organization in Utah.  The finance team has worked tirelessly and consistently towards that goal.

We consider the support from our community a sacred trust.  To make sure our financial reporting to the community is transparent, we conduct in-depth reviews through various committees of our Board of Directors. The Administration/Finance Committee is comprised of business leaders that review every monthly financial statement and ask me many detailed and searching questions regarding our financial statements and accounting processes.  We have an Investment Committee of financial experts that review and authorize our Investment actions.  An independent Audit Committee hires our auditors and manages the audit process from start to finish. All of these committees regularly report their findings directly to the Executive Committee and Board of Directors.

UWSL is not perfect, but we keep trying! We deal with human error just like any organization, but I can say that our accounting staff takes what we do very seriously in safeguarding and managing United Way’s resources. We strive for excellence every day.

We feel we are directly contributing to building a stronger community, not just counting beans!
